ABOUT ME

My work and philosophy

I see landscapes as a essential part of living a healthy balanced life.  Greenery and shade trees are essential for our warming climate.  With each decision about your environment there can be gains for biodiversity and cooling the climate.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN

1985 - Present
Sole Owner Landscape Design Business

I have 35 years of experience growing plants and building relationships with clients. My first business was in the seaside town of East Hampton, New York.  My clients there included Kelly and Calvin Klein, Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel.  After a  move to Christchurch in 1990, I began a small design business here.  My preferred way to work is to design and build the landscape.

MOUNTAIN BIKE  LOVER

2004-2014

What began as a love of riding bikes and track building, turned into event organising.   The widely attended and  much loved   Lyttelton Urban Down Hill   ran for three years, with 2014 the final and most rewarding event.  The unwavering support from our team of volunteers and sponsors made this event very special and part of Lyttelton history.   The Huxster Mountain Bike Trust still organises kids event at Mcleans Island, Christchurch.

PROFESSIONAL ADVENTURE RACING ATHLETE

1997-2000

For a few years I trained and succeeded as a  multi-sport adventure racing athlete.  My standing record of 12hr:09min from the West Coast to East Coast of New Zealand's South Island, was set in February 1997.
Next came a few international expedition racing, with two wins;   The 1997 Eco-Challenge, Cairns, Australia   and 1998 Eco-Challenge, Argentina.
I retired in 2000 at the age of 37 to focus on my active family.

MOTHER

My role as a parent to three young adults, keeps me humble and teaches me important lessons about life.

I have recently completed a MLA  by Project. The research and design for this work was based in the Christchurch Residential Red Zone. The project looks at how to use a post-disaster landscape to commemorate the loss of place.

SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE OF GREEN ROOF AND GREEN WALLS - UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE, BURNLEY CAMPUS

Spring 2016

The green infrastructure area of design is growing as our weather becomes more extreme.  The course work included two weeks of practical green roof design, followed by a relevant  maintenance plan.  Plant choice backed by research,  is critical for these types of designs.
